The African Footballer of the Year once again made the difference. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice (41/65) and secured the victory for Borussia Dortmund against Sparta Prague, 3: 1 (1: 1). The second-placed in the Bundesliga celebrated its third win in the third preseason game.
This was the last test ahead of the return round opener in Mönchengladbach on Saturday (kick-off at 18.30). Thomas Tuchel’s team is ready to perform admirably in the Borussia Park. But Borussia’s injuries problems continue. Shinji Kagawa and Adrian Ramos will miss the game due to illness. Sven Bender is continuing to suffer from tendonitis on his right foot, Nuri Sahin and Marcel Schmelzer are not yet fully recovered.
The right rear defender at BVB, Lukasz Piszczek was tested in the training camp in Dubai. In the first rounds though, Matthias Ginter (three goals, eleven preparatory games) seemed to have assured his place for the time being; in the last few weeks before Christmas Piszczek was ruled out for the majority of games. Apparently, the Pole has recaptured lost ground on its position. Ginter came in after an hour – in midfield.
“There is room for improvement in all areas.” Thomas Tuchel
Against Sparta Prague, the Czech Republic’s second-placed, Borussia Dortmund certainly played well. Reus scored on a fine solo, Aubameyang curled the ball against the crossbar and Castro’s shot was cleared off the line by Nhamoinesu. Just four minutes before the break Aubameyang finally broke the spell – terrifically served by Gündogan. With this Dortmund’s dominance was well-deserved. Twice only, Sparta dared to attack the BVB box. Bürki was seen at both low shots.
Four minutes after the break, the Swiss scored for Borussia Dortmund. After a carelessness in defense, Lafata’s, Sparta captain, dangerous low cross brought the result to 1: 1. However, the Czechs were not happy with the even score. But, Aubameyang brought his team back in the lead with his second goal. Shortly after, Mkhitaryan wrapped up the result; Leitner had earlier hit the post. Dortmund coach, Thomas Tuchel, was not completely satisfied despite the victory. “There is still room for improvement in all areas” the coach stated after the final whistle and continued: “we still lack freshness”.
